Obituary for Richard Funk

May 1, 1937 - June 19, 2017
West Grove, Pennsylvania | Age 80

Richard L. "Dick" Funk, 80, of West Grove, PA, completed his tour of Life on June 19, 2017. Born on May 1, 1937, in Lewistown, PA, he was the son of the late John C. and Helen (Toot) Funk.

Dick departed the way he did most things: briskly, quietly, and efficiently. Hastily, some might say.

In addition to serving as an officer in the US Navy, Dick spent most of his career in the field of education at West Nottingham Academy and Edgewood High School in Maryland. He taught math, history, and English in the classroom; helped students find colleges and financial aid as a guidance counselor; explained American ways to students from foreign countries; and planted trees, built rockets, had a go at intramural sports, played trumpet in the pep band, and cheered for the Rams from the stands.

Most recently, Dick's favorite activities were working out at the Y; walking, especially at Longwood Gardens; tending his flowers and yard; sharing news about his family (only slightly embellished); attending theatrical productions; and enjoying retirement with Del. He sang barbershop with the Chorus of the Brandywine and supported events of the Sons of the American Revolution, having researched the family for a link to the group.

He was a master of staying in touch, connecting with family all over the country, classmates, teachers, and students. As friends share memories of Dick (aka, Mr. Funk), recurring themes are kindness, acceptance, encouragement, and joy.

Dick is survived by his daughters: Jen Funk Weber and her husband, Mike, of Glacierview, AK, and Vicki Stones and her husband, Rich, of Alexandria, VA; three grandchildren: Ryan Stones and his wife, Camille, of Coopersburg, PA, Brett Stones and his wife, Jenny, of Milton, FL, and Lexi Stones Strom and her husband, Chase, of Raleigh, NC; two great-grandchildren: Autumn and Parker Stones; partner, Del Boulden of West Grove, PA; and three brothers: Calvin Funk, John Funk, and Gene Funk and his wife, Mary.

A graveside service will be held at 2PM on August 12 at the West Nottingham Presbyterian Church cemetery followed by a reception at West Nottingham Academy.
