Obituary

Peggy Lucille Hellane "Nan", 85 of Elkton, MD, passed away peacefully on October 18, 2018. A lifelong fan of thoroughbred horse racing she reached the starting gate born to the late Robert T. and Kathleen L. Slate on January 30, 1933 in Hagerstown, Maryland. And they're off! Peggy quickly jumped out to the lead as a star basketball player at her Hagerstown high school, St. Mary's where she still holds the record for most points in a single game. John Thomas Hellane II was following close behind and the couple married in September 1954. As they ran down the backstretch their children, Peggy and John, were born and the family moved to Elkton in 1959 as they entered the clubhouse turn. Passing on the rail husband John, an employee of C & P Telephone Company was named President of the Northern Council Telephone Pioneers and along with First Lady Peggy, spent countless hours volunteering on behalf of that organization, the Elkton Little League, the Knights of Columbus and the Society of St. Vincent dePaul. Throughout their time together and even after her beloved John's passing in 1996, Peggy's home always welcomed the friends of her children and grandchildren and many referred to her by her nickname of endearment, Nan. At the wire Peggy enjoyed watching sports of all kind and travelling to various destinations along the East Coast with her family.

As she enters the winners circle she is survived by her children Peggy Marie Morrissey and husband Robert "Bob", and John Thomas Hellane III and wife Gemma; granddaughter Heather K. Morrissey and husband, Ian M. Frost; honorary granddaughter Karli Secor and wife Tanya; brothers, Robert "Bobby", George "Buddy", and Charles "Casey" Slate and their wives' Rebecca, Judy and Pam; several nieces and nephews; and four-legged grandchildren Kit Kat, Yoda and her cherished Ginger, and furry great-grandchildren, Crosby, Jack and Luna.

Visitation for Peggy's family and friends will be at Immaculate Conception Church in Elkton, MD at 10:30 am on Thursday, October 25, 2018 followed by a mass to celebrate her life at 11:30 am. Burial will immediately follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to "Corolla Wild Horse Fund" and sent in care of R.T. Foard Funeral Home, 259 E. Main St., Elkton, MD 21921.
