Mary C. McCollum, age 80, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 3, 2019 at her home in Wilmington, DE. She was born on December 3, 1938 in Wilmington, DE to the late Kasmir and Josephine Cholewicki Smolka.
Mary worked for a while as a typist for a Wilmington publishing company but later worked in food services at Salesianum High School for many years. She also worked at the concession stands at Delaware Park and receptionist at H&R Block. The job she enjoyed best was being a mother and grandmother. She was known as "spirited woman who always placed the family first."
A passionate sports fan, Mary loved and cheered the "Fightin Irish" football team of Notre Dame University. After the retirement of her husband, John, the couple decided to travel the world, visiting Antarctica on a cruise, and Ireland several times as well.
Mary was a member of St. Hedwig's Parish. She was also a member of the "Women's Club," "New Castle County Irish Society," "Claymore Senior Center" and St. Hedwig's Church "Holy Rosary Society."
Mary is survived by her daughter, Debragh Smith (Brian) of Newport, DE; sons, Tim McCollum (Phyllis) of Rehoboth, DE and Matthew McCollum (Danielle) of Port Penn, DE; daughter-in-law, Barbara McCollum of Newark, DE. She is also survived by her brother, Joseph Smolka; sisters, Bernadette Brittingham and Cass Nagowski; nine grandchildren, Erin, Shane, Shannon, Brian, Shaun, Casey, Connor, Callie, and Luke; five great-grandchildren, Barry, Remy, Jack, Gianna, Sean and one great-grandson due in June.
In addition to her parents, Mary is preceded in death by her husband, John McCollum; and son, Sean McCollum.
Family and friends are being called to visit from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, February 11, 2019 at R.T. Foard & Jones Funeral Home, 122 West Main Street, Newark, DE 19711. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 12, 2019 at St. Hedwig's Church, 408 South Harrison Street, Wilmington DE 19805. Family and friends are being called to visit one hour prior. Memorial contributions may be made payable to "New Castle County Irish Society" or "Claymore Senior Center," and sent in care of the funeral home.
