Obituary

Marjorie Brown Truitt, age 84, of Fair Hill, MD, and formerly of Newark, DE, passed away on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at Franklin Square Medical Center in Baltimore, MD. She was born on October 19, 1933 in Newark, DE to the late Allan P., Sr. and Anna Louise Barr Brown.

After graduating with honors "Phi Beta Kappa" from the University of Delaware, Marjorie worked as an English teacher at Christiana High School for over 30 years. While teaching fulltime in the 60's and 70's, Mrs. Truitt was also a volunteer leader of the Appleton Boys' 4-H Club in Cecil County, Maryland, the culmination of her 4-H involvement which began for her at age 10 in Delaware and continued as a parent of two 4-H'ers in Maryland.

Upon her retirement from working at Christiana High School, Mrs. Truitt was a volunteer with a number of organizations, including Habitat for Humanity. In the New Castle County, Delaware Habitat affiliate, she worked on the Family Selection Committee, and in the Cecil County affiliate, she worked on the same committee, and served on the Board of Directors. She was also actively involved in the work of Meeting Ground, a Cecil County ministry to homeless persons, and was a volunteer with CONTACT Delaware. In addition, she worked in Union Hospital's Pastoral Care Services as a Chaplain's Assistant.

A lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church of Newark, she served as an Elder and was involved in a variety of committees and activities. She was especially dedicated to her work on the Social Justice Committee and to her efforts in helping to re-settle refugee families form Afghanistan, Sudan, and Bosnia. Never truly retired from teaching, she helped church sponsored refugees learn English taught in the Adult Education Program at First Presbyterian and did extensive tutoring on a volunteer basis.

She is survived by her son, Richard Truitt, and his wife, Ella, of North East, MD; sisters, Eleanor Irwin, of Newark, DE, and Mary Ellen Biederman, of Newark, DE; brother, Allan P. Brown, Jr., and his wife, Linda, of Newark, DE; eight grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her daughter, Sharon Wolfe, and her sister, Anna Louise Brown.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, March 10, 2018, at R.T. Foard Funeral Home, P.A., 259 East Main Street, Elkton, MD 21921. Friends and family may visit one-hour prior beginning at 2:00 PM. All other services will be private.
