Obituary

John Llera, age 84, of Newark, DE, passed away on Thursday, May 26, 2016, at the Delaware Veterans Home in Milford, DE. He was born November 22, 1931, in Norfolk, VA to the late Juan and Juanita Santos Llera of Puerto Rico.

John served his country for 27 years in both the Army and the Navy, from which he retired. He then worked in the U.S. Civil Service for another 24 years at the Elsmere Veteran's Hospital. An avid photographer his entire life, he also did some staff work for the Newark Post and the News Journal after retiring from the VA Hospital.

Throughout his life, John enjoyed traveling, skiing, swimming, gardening, and photography. In retirement, he was very active with the Newark Senior Center, where he especially enjoyed table tennis and travel tours.

John was also a Pearl Harbor survivor. He was raised in Hawaii, where his father was a Navy sailor stationed at Pearl Harbor. As a ten year old boy, John witnessed firsthand the attack on December 7, 1941, from his family housing; the memories of which stayed with him throughout his life.

He is survived by his wife Joan Aneda-Llera; daughters, Linda Nuoffer, and her husband, Ron, of Newark, DE, and Sandra Llera, and her husband, Patrick Raynaud, of Columbia, MD; brothers, Louis Llera, of Charleston, SC, and Robert Llera, of Atlanta, GA; and three grandchildren, Katherine, Max, and Adelyn.

In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brothers, Alex Llera and George Llera.

A Service will be held at 2PM on Saturday, June 18, 2016 at R.T. Foard & Jones Funeral Home, Inc., 122 West Main Street, Newark, DE 19711. Friends and family may visit one hour prior beginning at 1PM. Burial will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution checks can be made to "Meals on Wheels Program at the Newark Senior Center" or "Delaware Veterans Home" and sent c/o the funeral home.
