George Edgar Messick, 89, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2012.

'Edgar' as he was affectionately called was born in Kemblesville, PA in 1922, the son of the late Howard and Anna Stoops Messick. Edgar moved to Newark, DE as a child and graduated from Newark High School. He then enlisted in the Army Air Force and served in WW II in the European Theater. Returning to DE, he started his 40 year career at Hercules Powder Co. as an accomplished glass blower. With his keen attention to detail, he devoted his spare time to woodworking and crafted many beautiful pieces of furniture. He loved his Phillies, his dog, 'Joe', his home, fishing, hunting, bowling and later word puzzles.

His wife of 49 years, Theresa, predeceased him in 2000 and his brother Burton in 2004. Edgar is survived by his niece and caregiver, Geri Sentman and her husband Warren of Wyoming, DE, where he recently resided. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

A service honoring his life will be held at R.T. Foard & Jones Funeral Home, 122 West Main St., Newark, DE 19711 on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. with a visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be in Head of Christiana Cemetery.
