Obituary for Doris B. "Peggy" Briscoe

September 17, 1934 - January 16, 2021
Newark, Delaware | Age 86

Faithful follower of the Lord, and Devoted Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother

Doris Marguerite "Peggy" Beers Briscoe, of Newark, passed away at home in her sleep on January 16, 2021, at age 86, on the eve of her wedding anniversary to Frank H. Briscoe, with whom she shared a passionate marriage for 68 years. Peggy was born on September 17, 1934 in Newark to the late James E. and Elva Kathryn Beers.

Peggy was a lifelong, active member of Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Newark from the time it was founded by her parents and other close family and community members in 1942, and was continually dedicated to serving as a part of that community alongside her children and grandchildren. She served as the secretary to the Associate Dean of Agriculture at the University of Delaware, from where she retired after 16 years of dedicated service in 1991. A native of Newark, she fondly remembered attending Newark High School on Main Street as well as watching Joe Flacco quarterback for the Blue Hens.

Peggy retained the glamour of her generation throughout her life, but her coiffed hair, red lipstick, and scent of White Diamonds never inhibited her from also being hard working, dedicated to her family, and breathlessly active. Her enthusiasm for sharing life with her loved ones was steadily demonstrated through her constant generosity and continual involvement. Peggy maintained an immaculate home, made all of her children's clothing by hand until they reached high school age, regularly babysat grandchildren, periodically traveled the country, maintained encyclopedic knowledge of the Dallas Cowboys and the Nashville music scene, helped start the Pioneer Girls at church and was involved for nearly a decade, served home-cooked meals at every holiday to her large and ever-growing family on matching china, and took great pleasure in making absolutely sure that everyone got exactly what they wanted for Christmas.

Her family will always be thankful for the privilege of having her with them for such a long, happy time, and will remember and be inspired by her breadth of interests and loving dedication to them.

Peggy is survived by her husband, Frank H. Briscoe, who devotedly cared for her at home for the past five years, her four children, Karen Coleman (Kenneth), Connie Kirby (Robert), Richard Briscoe (Dorothy), and Scott Briscoe (Kimberly), who all remained in the Newark area and were close to her throughout her life. Her nine grandchildren, Kandra, Kyle, Meggen, Michael, Elspeth, Olivia, Jeremy, Benjamin, and Eric will cherish memories of special times and remember her fondly as an integral part of their youth, and her 18 great-grandchildren will never be in doubt about how special they were to "Grandmom."

Family and friends are invited to attend the funeral service on Friday, January 29 at Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Newark at 308 Possum Park Road at 11 am, graveside service at Head of Christiana Presbyterian Church, and reception at EP immediately following. Appropriate face masks and social distancing will be required while inside any buildings.
