Obituary

Mr. Donald R. Johnson began his eternal rest on November 15, 2018. He was born on June 15, 1929, the second son of the late Joseph T. Johnson and Ruth E. Brown Johnson in Rising Sun, Maryland. He graduated from Rising Sun public schools and West Nottingham Academy, located in Colora, Maryland. Upon graduation, Don worked at the Rising Sun National Bank. Don enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country from April 1951 to April 1953 attaining the rank of sergeant. Don joined the Comptroller of the Currency in 1955 and attended the ABA Stoner Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University. Don began as a national bank examiner and retired as the Associate Director for Trust Operation after 38 years of service from the comptroller in Washington DC.

After retirement, he used his strong financial background working as a consultant at Furash and Company in Washington DC as well as with H & R Block as a preparer during tax seasons in Richmond, VA. Don was a faithful member of Westhampton United Methodist Church for over 63 years, serving as a Sunday school teacher, usher, and the Chairman of the Finance and Endowment Committees for decades. He was a Mason and past Worshipful Master of Saint John's Lodge, No. 36 A.F. & A.M. He was a 30 year member of the 40+8, past Chef de Gare of Voiture 449, Local 1530. He was an active member of the American Legion, Post 84, serving as Post Commander, in the Memorial Rifles and the State Treasurer Emeritus for the American Legion- Department of Virginia.

He was preceded in death by both his older brother, Russell M. Johnson (Betty), and his younger brother, J. Edward Johnson (Nancy), all of Rising Sun, Maryland. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 63 years, Dorothy Jane Orr Johnson, of Richmond, and a much beloved daughter, Valerie Johnson South and her Husband, F. Dale South of Glen Allen, VA. He was a proud and loving grandfather to Matthew D. South (Holly) of Carrollton, VA and Jonathan C. South, of Richmond, VA.

Don was a generous and loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was happiest with a day on the water with his fishing pole in his hand and particularly enjoyed traveling while spending time with his family. He had a wonderful sense of humor and never met a stranger. His life was guided by his dedication to God, Country, and Family. In the last few years of his life, he faced the challenges of Alzheimer's disease and accepted the unknown with grace while lovingly supported by his wife throughout his illness. He leaves his family and friends with many treasured memories and will be dearly missed but never forgotten.

A celebration of his life will take place at 11 AM Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at R.T. Foard Funeral Home, P.A., 111 S. Queen Street, Rising Sun, MD 21911, where family and friends may visit beginning at 10 AM. Burial will follow at West Nottingham Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Westhampton United Methodist Church Endowment Fund, 6100 Patterson Ave, Richmond, VA 23226.
