Lancaster, Pennsylvania | Age 96
Clara Hoskins Larsen of Lancaster, Pennsylvania passed away peacefully on April 10th, 2017 at the age of ninety-six.
Clara was born on her family farm in Warren County, Virginia on September 3rd, 1920 to Mary Olive Hoskins and Harry Rhodes Hoskins. She attended the one room Rockland School and later graduated from Warren County High School. Following graduation, she moved to Washington, D.C where she worked as a secretary at the Washington Post and a DC law firm.
In 1949 Clara married Paul F. Scholla, a mining engineer. They had three children, Clara Anne (Tiki) Scholla, Stephen Rhodes Scholla and Michael Heal Scholla. Clara was also a stepmother to her three stepchildren, Sandra Lynn Scholla, Paul Scholla, Jr., and Barbara (Bobbie) Scholla. Paul's work provided the opportunity for Clara and her family to travel to and live in new and exciting places including Brazil, Hawaii, Korea, and Thailand.
In 1963 Clara divorced and returned to the Washington, DC area where she worked for the Forest Industries Committee on Taxation as an Administrative Aide to the Committee's president. In 1968 Clara relocated to Orlando, Florida where she served as Director of Personnel of Koscot Interplanetary, Inc. Clara continued her work in personnel management in New York City until her retirement in the late 1970's. During her time in New York, Clara met and married Paul Larsen.
In retirement Clara returned to Virginia where she began painting and became a member of, as well as an exhibitor for, The Blue Ridge Arts Council. She was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Most importantly she was also a loving and helpful grandmother.
Clara will long be remembered for her sense of humor and the entertaining stories she would share with family and friends. Second only to her stories was her reputation as a highly talented cook; her prime rib is legendary!
Clara is survived by her sister Ellen Hoskins of Bentonville, Virginia; her son Michael Scholla (Muffy Scholla) of Elkton, Maryland; her son Stephen Scholla (Susan Scholla) of Reston, Virginia; her daughter Tiki (Clara) McCarthy Finney (Dennis Finney) of Michigan; as well as four nieces and nephews, eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and numerous great-nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her last husband Paul Larsen, her brother Harry Doran Hoskins, and her son-in- law Brian McCarthy.
A memorial service will be held on May 7th, 2017 at 1:30 pm at Calvary Episcopal Church in Front Royal, Virginia to celebrate Clara's life. Interment will follow at Prospect Hill Cemetery.
