Obituary

Dr. Alexander "Alex" Cordova, 89, of Newark, Delaware, passed away peacefully on December 25, 2017. Alex was born in Quito, Ecuador to Alfonso Miguel Cordova and Eugenia Rivadeneira Cordova. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Byron Enrique and Gabriel Alfonso, and his sister, Fanny Piedad Cordova.

Alex is survived by his sister, Maruja Coloma and his 10 children: Anny Berry, Augusto Cordova, Alexandra Wyant, Montserrat (Steve) Mintz, Elsie (Dan) Beatty, Patricia (Pat) Canning, Alicia (Bob) Pettit, Daniel (Deanna) Cordova, Nora (Alex) Rittberg and Eric (Cheri) Cordova. He is survived by many grandchildren, step grandchildren and great grandchildren. Alex is also survived by Anny Ridder Cordova, his former wife and lifelong friend, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Alex grew up and became a physician in Quito, Ecuador. Soon after completing his studies and receiving his medical license he moved to Wilmington, Delaware in 1957 with his wife and two children, for a one- or two-year study period. That study period increased gradually and his family grew in size. In 1962 he received his Delaware license to practice medicine and started practicing family medicine in Newark, Delaware.

A Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, Alex served as an adjunct instructor at Thomas Jefferson College of Medicine and was president of the Delaware Academy of Family Physicians from 1985 to 1986. He continued to practice family medicine until his retirement in 1996. Alex spent his adult life focusing on the people around him, whether they were family, patients or friends.

Alex considered accolades and donations to charities very private and personal. Per his request, there will be no funeral or memorial service. Alex donated his remains through the Humanity Gifts Registry of Philadelphia. In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation to the charity of your choice and send it in care of R.T.
