Torrence "Tod" Davis Young, age 71, of Perryville, MD lost his 6-month battle to sarcoma cancer on Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at Christiana Hospital. He was born on January 3, 1948 in Wilmington, DE to the late Warren E. Young and Rosalie (Fridel) Young.

Tod began work as a computer programmer for Thiokol, which became Orbital ATK, until his retirement in 2015. He enjoyed spending time on the North East River, both at his cottage and boating along the river. Tod was an avid Philadelphia sports fan and would often talk about his favorite teams, the Eagles and Phillies, with his son Brian. He was a great Pop-Pop and loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Tod is survived by this loving wife of 50 years, Ruth A. Young of Perryville, MD; son, Brian Young of Rising Sun, MD; daughter, Shelley Ollis and her husband, Pete of Perryville, MD; four grandchildren: Cameron, Nathan, Ryan, Violet; and brother, Douglas Young of Oxford, PA. Tod was preceded in death by his parents.

A celebration of Tod's life will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, December 27, 2019 at Moore's Chapel United Methodist Church, 392 Blake Rd., Elkton, MD 21921, where family and friends may begin visiting at 10:00 am. Interment will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made payable to "Moore's Chapel UMC" and sent in care of R.T. Ruth, I was a coworker of Tod's for the final 11 (2004-2015) years of his career at ATK. We
would always joke with each other about
baseball since he was a Phillies fan and I liked the Mets. Tod was one of the first people I thought of when the eagles won it all in 2018. He was a great guy and he will be missed. You a and your loved ones are in my thoughts and prayers.

I worked for 13 years with Tod at Thiokol.
He was a pleasure to work with. Everyone thought very highly of Tod. He was such a friendly and kind man. My husband and I visited with he and Ruth at their home off Lombard Rd. I can't believe he is gone. My heart goes out to Ruth, the children and grandchildren. I'm sorry I missed the viewing. I was thinking it was the 28th instead of the 27th. Chris Dixon

Ruthie, Brian, and Shelley,
I am so sorry for your loss, and for all members of your family who each must feel sorrow that he is no longer here. To not see him in his familiar chair, must be keenly felt. Tod was gentle and funny and unassuming, and he touched many lives. He was someone who paid attention to the details; and in attending, he let others know that they mattered to him. I smile when I think about him wrapping my leg cast in plastic bags and so very much duct tape, so that I too could learn to kayak. Over the years, he taught many people at the Charlestown cottage to boat, to kayak, to love his view from the porch, and to love his river. He was someone who took care of things, and we will all miss him. Love, Jean

Ruthie,
Bud told me about Tod's passing. You two were such an amazing classy couple. I don't remember if you knew that he profoundly changed my life and likely saved my life. I was going to become a marine after high school. He and Bud talked me into going to Western. I owe him a lot. He was such a good man.

Dear Ruthie,
Tim and I are so sorry to learn of Tod's passing. When I heard the news, memories of all the good times we had together as kids came flooding back - times at the cottage playing hide and seek and catching fireflies, thinking it was heaven spending the night sleeping on those old iron army cots on the porch, swimming and jumping off the raft in the river, fishing, and as teens, learning to waterski. Tod would drive the boat and it was always an adventure because as he would retell it, I was blind as a bat without my glasses! Then there are all the memories of our times spent together at the farm during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays - watching Pop Pop make fudge on the marble top table, playing poker on the big front porch, hiding under the huge dining room table during the adults' Thanksgiving dinner (and thinking they didn't know we were there. LOL) As adults the times together were infrequent as we lived so far apart (me in Georgia and then Florida) but on holidays when we did reconnect, it was always as though we hadn't really been apart. He will be sorely missed.
With love,
Cousin Judy

I remember one time when uncle Tod, aunt Ruthie, Brian, and Shelley came to aunt Betty's during summer. I was sitting in the living room and he was tracing letters on my back and he told me to try and guess what he was spelling. I didn't figure it out but, I can't remember if it was because I really just couldn't figure it out or if I got it wrong on purpose because it felt nice. I love you guys.

Auth Ruthie I am praying for you during this tough time. As a child I remember time with Uncle Tod when we visited Washington DC, the Smithsonian institute and the space museum. Visiting Maryland was always so special to me. I remember Tod took me on the sail boat at the cottage. I was pretty nervous but I remember Tod's calm disposition and I knew I was in good hands. I had the opportunity to visit Tod again in January this year. We talked about our memories at the cottage and he reflected on his retirement. Even though time had surely passed, his kindness and mild tempered disposition was still so comforting to me. I will always remember how kind of a man he was. Love you, Debra

Aunt Ruthie, Paula and I are sorry for your loss. We always enjoyed spending time with Uncle Tod. I remember the first time we was at the cottage. The windows were open with the breeze blowing through the cottage. Uncle Tod was reading the sports page in the paper and enjoying every minute of the day. I remember your wedding in Clarksville, and Uncle Tod always taking time with us kids on summer visits. Peace, Ronnie & Paula

Thinking of you and sending my heart-felt sympathy. I remember all the wonderful times we had together. It was such an enjoyment to spend time with Tod and your family the many summers Marion and I came there to visit. I will never forget the summer we were there that Ruthie and I decided to reupholster the couch with material that had been our mother's and was probably pretty old!. When he got home from work that day, it was in pieces all over the floor at the cottage and he wondered if we would be able to get the couch back together and in working condition! He was very happy the next day when he got home and we had the couch finished and looking great! I will treasure all the times I had the pleasure of being with Tod! With love, Mary Lois

My uncle Tod is always; calm, caring, genuine, giving, and by all accounts of everyone lucky enough to know him a great guy. Tod truly loved family, his own for sure, and his extended family. I have to think that when he met my aunt Ruth at WKU he had no idea that he would end up spending his vacations year after year traveling to Indiana to visit her eight siblings and a seemingly endless number of nieces and nephews, but he did just that. It was obvious how much he loved Ruth, who has rock star status here in southern Indiana. By coming here with her and allowing us to get to know him, Tod has rock star status as well. My uncle Tod is a person who's character I consider to be the benchmark for what it means to be a dedicated family man. I love my uncle Tod and am lucky to have so many great memories with him. My most heartfelt sympathies and love to my aunt Ruth and cousin's Brian and Shelley.
