Tribute & Message From The Family

Message From The Family

Thank you for your support during this difficult time. Please enhance this tribute to Gail by adding your memories and photos.

Gail Maclary Chickersky, age 70 of Newark, DE died on May 1, 2019. She was born on March 8, 1949 in Wilmington, DE to the late Harry Maclary and Anne (Richards) Maclary Munyan.

A lifetime resident of Newark. she graduated in 1967 from Newark High. She received her Bachelor's in Business Administration from Virginia Tech in 1971 and later earned her MBA from the University of Delaware. After more than 30 years in automotive retail as a controller and general manager at several Delaware dealers, Gail became a Financial Advisor at Morgan Stanley, retiring in 2016.

Gail never really retired in the traditional sense. She was always active in the community, serving on the boards of the Newark Senior Center, the Newark High Alumni Association, the Newark Historical Society, the Pencader Heritage Museum and many other worthy causes.

Along the way, Gail developed many deep friendships with people from all walks of life. She always had time to lend a hand, listen to a story, help mentor someone who needed guidance or bring a group together to better serve a common cause. Gail was a master at organizing and delegating responsibility. Her departure has left a void that we hope will be temporary. Her life is an example of how to pay it forward and make the world a better place.

Gail is survived by her brothers Harvey Maclary and his wife Tina; Ed Maclary and his wife, Rita Shapiro; nieces Rachel Maclary, Emily Maclary, and Una Kim; nephews Andrew Maclary and Kevin Maclary. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Chickersky.

Gail preferred celebration over mourning. A gathering of friends celebrating her life will be held Saturday, May 25, 2019 from 2pm to 5pm at the Newark Country Club, 300 W. Main Street, Newark, DE 19711. If you wish to honor Gail's legacy the family suggests contributions to The Newark Senior Center or the Newark Historical Society be sent in care of R.T. Foard & Jones, Inc., 122 West Main Street, Newark, DE 19711. As an alternative, consider honoring her by volunteering for a cause that is important to you and remember her as you serve.

Condolence & Memory Journal

Gail and I swam at the Newark Senior Center. She was always interesting to talk with and was up to date on all of the current events. She was fun and always ready with a smile and a laugh. She will be missed.

Gail was the daughter of one of my mother's closest friends and one of my favorite teachers who sat with my father on the night that he passed away. Whenever I came to Newark for whatever reason Gail would find a way for us to get together and visit. When I bought a house in Fairfield for my daughter to attend the UD she acted as a surrogate mother for my daughter and even donated her grandmother's dining room table for my daughter to use. I joined the Newark Historical Society as a Life Member due to Gail's enthusiasm and attended several Newark Senior Center events at her invitation. Always a delight and a force in everything that mattered in Newark, Gail will be seriously missed by all. I will save my best wishes for her family until my coming trip to Newark in her honor. Rest in Peace my friend.

My sympathies are extended to all of The Maclary families and the city of Newark. Gail connected people and helped with reunions. Her helpful and encouraging spirit was a gift to all of us. Her shoes are impossible to fill. I thank God for her very meaningful life and I ask God to bless the ones she left behind.

As the senior member of the Dutton family I want to extend our condolences to Ed and Harvey Maclary and to all of her cousins, nieces, nephews and other members of her extended family including the Chickerskys and Munyons. The Maclary and Dutton/Rittenhouse families go back a long ways in Newark. So much so that one could think of Gail and I as brother and sister........ (She was always relieved that my extensive research into family history was never able to show that we were actually related.) Gail was born March 08 1949. I was born February 20 1949. Our mothers were life long best friends. We were, always have been, and always will be virtual sister and brother. We always greeted and departed with a heart-felt hug and a kiss. Grief still has a firm grip on my heart even as I hear Gail's laughter and see her smile; I know full well that she wants that grief to let go of me and allow me to smile and laugh along with her. That's the best solution for getting through all of this. I am blessed to have known Gail; her spirit will live with me forever.

I met Gail when we were 22 years old and my late husband Ed and I moved across the street from her on Choate Street in 1971. Ed quickly nicknamed her gabby Gail for her love of chit chat. She was always full of dry humor and quick wit. I will always remember her laugh. My condolences go to her family on her passing.

Somewhere in the course of my life here in DE, I met Gail. I can't remember if it was a job I held, working out or volunteering. I do remember her intelligence, wit and straight forwardness! She was also the person who sold my son his first car! My condolences to the family. May you find comfort in your fond memories.

Posted by Vivian Nichols - Wilmington, DE - Acquaintance   May 06, 2019

I've been fortunate to have been a friend of Gail's since 7th grade. She was funny, smart, loyal, industrious and had a mind as sharp as they come for remembering people, events and all things Newark. One early memory I have of us is lying on her bed in her home on Kirkland highway as she identified all the cars passing by by the sound of the motors! I'd pop up to confirm but since I didn't know cars, even by sight, I'm not sure how accurate she was! Not a surprise that she spent so many years in the auto business. Gail will be missed but not forgotten.

Gail came into my life when her mom married my father in law. She took me under her wing and taught me more than any teacher could have. She was my sister, my friend, my mentor, my confidant, always there with wise words to get my through my dilemmas. But, she didn't just do this for me. She did it for everyone she met. How is this possible? We will all miss her deeply for different reasons but her presence will always be with us. We love you Gail and I know you are watching over each and everyone of us because that is what you do.

Gail will be missed by many. On more than a few ocasions Gail mentored me, helped with difficult issues and offered a helping hand. Didn't matter to her if it was business or personal Gail was always there. We spent a lot of time working together when she worked at Nucar. Most of the time she'd answer a question before I could ask it. Will miss you Gail. Rest in peace you've surely earned a place in the heavens.

Hope she is having her Appletini in heaven with her husband right now and looking down on us and wondering why we are all so sad. She would never want anyone to mourn her I'm sure.

Gail was a fellow NHS 67 alumnus and Hokie and we shared many trips between Blacksburg and Newark. Those trips were full of great conversation and laughs and are the source of many great memories... especially when we were married during a breakdown at the Park Motel in rural Virginia. Gail always had nice things to say about everyone and she will be very much missed by Yellowjackets, Hokies, Newarkians and most of all by her family and friends.

Gail's absence is a tremendous loss to many individuals and organizations. Ours is no exception. We will truly miss her sage advice, experience, resources, stories and humor for some time. But her great gift to us is that she left us in much better condition than if she had not shared her time and talents with us. Gail was impressive and inspirational in so many ways and on so many levels

I have a deep respect and appreciation for her diligent, selfless and amazingly wonderful volunteer service. It was not only that she performed this service with thorough expertise but that she did it with such dedication and loving kindness. We were all so fortunate to have known her.
